Islands and harbours

Much of the Spanish list is on the islands and along the Mediterranean shore, in towns that fill up in summer. Gelateria Deliri is beside the fish market in Ciutadella on Menorca, and Vivi's in Ibiza town stays open late. Mucca da Latte has a terrace over the harbour at Cambrils, and Heladería Punto Dulce faces the beach in Estepona. Popular flavours go early in these towns. At Mister McCoy's Island Ices in Sóller some sell out by the afternoon.

Local produce

Spanish makers put regional food into the tubs. Gelateria Deliri pairs Menorcan cheese with fig and uses hazelnuts from Reus. Mister McCoy's Island Ices works with Sóller oranges, lemons and Mallorcan almonds. In Cádiz, La Cremería Gelato Italiano puts oloroso sherry in its Sherrymisu and makes flavours with Payoyo cheese and tocino de cielo, an egg-yolk custard of the south. Dai Gelato in Madrid follows the calendar, with roscón at Christmas and torrija at Easter.

Barcelona

Two of the Barcelona shops are entirely vegan. Cajú Gelato in El Born makes its cones in the shop, one of them with cinnamon, and Amma Gelato in Gràcia has benches outside and a menu that changes often. Gelaaati di Marco in the Gothic Quarter is Italian-run and sells cannoli and tiramisu beside the gelato.

Makers from abroad

Several shops are run by Italians, among them Gelateria Del Bianco in Cartagena and ArteSana Gelat La Fusta in Valencia. Heladería Punto Dulce is Argentine in style and known for dulce de leche, a caramel of slowly cooked milk.
