About

If you’re not careful, the entire world can seem to shrink to the size of a backlit phone screen. Worth a Journey is a guide to the places worth leaving it for. Edited in Ulm, Germany, we publish ranked lists of the world’s best places, 100 of one kind at a time: 29 so far, from saunas and baths to coffee houses, libraries and hikes, covering 2,900 venues in 140 countries.

Every list is computed by our own algorithm. For each category it works through millions of data points from hundreds of thousands of venues worldwide, and corrects for local customs and the quirks of each category. The same rules apply to every venue, wherever it is and whoever owns it. What each list admits is set out in the eligibility criteria.

Then we go and see. We visit ranked venues in person, and every visit serves as an anchor for the algorithm: where what we find on the ground and the computed result disagree, the algorithm is recalibrated and the list adjusted.

Our rankings are objective. A rank comes from the algorithm and the visits, and from nothing else. No venue can pay to enter a list, rise on it or stay on it. We charge no entry fees, accept no nominations, sell no listings and hold no stake in any venue we rank. Listed venues may display a badge once a list is out, and a badge never changes a rank.

The lists also live in print. The 2026 Guide collects 22 of them in one volume of 439 pages, with a watercolour and a full entry for the leading venues of each.

Worth a Journey is for people who would rather stand in a place than look at it on a phone, who want to know how a bathhouse works in Budapest or a coffee house in Vienna, and who will plan a whole trip around one venue when it is good enough.

Worth a Journey: go and see for yourself.
