The Mediterranean coast
Four of the French parlours stand close to the water between Nice and Marseille. Gelato D’Amore is a small stand in Nice where the owner hands out tastes and chats with each customer. Gelateria Del Porto, near the port of Antibes, shapes each scoop into a rose, petal by petal. Glacier Alessandro is near the port of La Ciotat, and Ciao Amore Gelati is near the Old Port in Marseille. All four work in the Italian style. Provençal flavours

L’Etoile Givrée bakes thick, crisp waffle cones by hand, and Insieme in Le Pouliguen, on the Atlantic coast, also makes its own. French shops usually price by the scoop, the boule. Two flavours start at €3.50 at Insieme and at €5 at Gelateria Del Porto, which takes cash only. Glacier Alessandro serves with a spatula, so portion sizes vary. Gelato D’Amore and Insieme sell tubs to take away.
