The Best Waterfalls in Iceland

South Iceland

Gullfoss sits on the Hvítá River, where two tiers drop into a deep, rugged canyon. People drive from Reykjavik on the Golden Circle and park in a large lot near the rim. Paths near the falls can be wet and slippery, and strong winds are possible, so bring waterproof clothing. Háifoss in Þjórsárdalur drops 122 metres beside colorful basalt cliffs and the Granni falls. The 7 km gravel road has potholes, so a 4x4 is advisable. Parking is free.

Skógar coast

Skógafoss drops about 60 metres over old sea cliffs, and its spray hangs over a river on the flat coastal plain. Visitors can walk a few minutes to the base or climb steps to a viewpoint above. Arrive early to avoid tour buses, and bring waterproof clothing close to the base. Kvernufoss lies nearby in a green gorge, where a narrow stream drops from a cliff and the falls can be walked behind. The trail from the Skógar Museum car park takes about 10 to 15 minutes on foot.

North and Westfjords

Dettifoss is 44 metres high and 100 metres wide, pouring over a basalt cliff on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river. Route 862 from the west is paved and ends at a car park, then a 1.5 km walk. Spray soaks visitors, so waterproof clothing is advised. Dynjandi lies in the Westfjords, a fan-shaped fall about 100 metres high above a fjord. Visitors drive Route 60 on gravel, then climb past smaller falls to the main one.
