The Best Museums in Latin America

Fossils in Argentina

Two of the four museums are natural history museums in Argentina. The Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio in Trelew shows dinosaur skeletons and fossils found in Patagonia and reopened after a renovation. The Museo de La Plata, founded in 1888, has dinosaur and whale skeletons and rooms on the first peoples of the Americas.

Peru and Brazil

The Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán in Lambayeque holds the gold and silver from the Moche tombs excavated at Huaca Rajada, and the route descends through the building in the order of the excavation. Brazil has two entries. The Instituto Ricardo Brennand in Recife is a private collection of arms, armour and paintings by Frans Post, shown in brick buildings styled as a castle. Inhotim at Brumadinho in Minas Gerais spreads contemporary art galleries and open-air works across a botanical garden large enough that many visitors rent carts.
