Reaching and seeing the slots

Antelope Canyon is seen only on a guided walk led by a Navajo guide, and large bags and tripods are not allowed on the tour. Buckskin Gulch is reached by hiking in from the Wire Pass trailhead along a dry wash, and some hikers continue on to the Paria confluence. Spooky Gulch is usually walked as a loop from Peek-a-boo. Nevidio Canyon is entered by most visitors on a guided canyoning tour that lasts 2.5 to 3 hours, while others walk a short path from the parking lot to the bridge. Little Wild Horse Canyon is a hike through the slot itself, often looped through Bell Canyon, and the full 8-mile loop takes 4 to 6 hours.

Fees, permits and booking

Several entries need paperwork before arrival. Kanarra Creek Canyon requires a permit of about $15 per person, and it sells out, so bookings are made online in advance. Buckskin Gulch needs a day permit, which can be bought online or at the lot. Antelope Canyon requires a guided tour booked in advance, with prices that vary and a permit fee added on top. Nevidio Canyon has a parking charge and an entry fee collected at the lot. Little Wild Horse Canyon charges no entry fee and offers free parking.

Footing, water and timing

Wet feet and rough ground are common across these canyons. At Kanarra Creek Canyon the water runs ankle to knee deep, and visitors wear water shoes. Peek-a-Boo Gulch has places where hikers squeeze and remove their packs, and the trail is poorly marked, so cairns mark the way. Spooky Gulch requires carrying 3 liters of water per adult, and midday summer sun is intense, so visitors go early. Painted Canyon has no restrooms and calls for plenty of water on a loop of about 5 miles. Flash floods are a serious risk at Buckskin Gulch and Little Wild Horse Canyon, and hikers check the forecast before entering. Nevidio Canyon has cold water and jumps of up to 5 meters.
