The Best Canyons & Gorges in Austria
6 of the 100 canyons in The World’s 100 Best Canyons & Gorges 2026 are in Austria. The highest placed is Seisenbergklamm in Weißbach bei Lofer, at number 5 in the world. Garnitzenklamm in Hermagor (number 19) and Liechtensteinklamm in St. Johann im Pongau (number 21) follow.
Salzburg
Three rock-walled gorges in the Salzburg area were cut by rivers. Seisenbergklamm near Weißbach bei Lofer is deep and narrow, and its walls close in toward a dark section that visitors reach on a wooden walkway above the water. Liechtensteinklamm at St. Johann im Pongau ends in a waterfall, but the route is crowded and costly for its length. Kitzlochklamm at Taxenbach runs through slate cut by the Rauriser Ache, and it has a circular trail that returns past the rim.
Carinthia and Tyrol
Garnitzenklamm at Hermagor and Tscheppaschlucht at Ferlach lie in Carinthia. Garnitzenklamm is divided into four sections with a fast stream and many waterfalls, and its upper parts are demanding. Tscheppaschlucht follows a clear mountain stream through narrow sections, and the return is by bus. Wolfsklamm at Stans in Tyrol is a narrow gorge with steep walls, walked one way uphill, with a separate route back down.
