The Best Gondolas in the World

32 of the 100 lines in The World’s 100 Best Cable Cars & Mountain Railways 2026 are gondolas, in 19 countries. The highest placed is Geoje Panorama Cable Car in Geoje, South Korea, at number 10 in the world. Eiger Express in Grindelwald, Switzerland (number 18) and Gulmarg Gondola in Gulmarg, India (number 26) follow.

What they are

Small cabins circulate on a moving cable and leave the station every few seconds, so there is rarely a timed departure. The Eiger Express in Grindelwald runs on three cables. Peak 2 Peak links Whistler and Blackcomb mountains across a valley, and the Whistler Village Gondola climbs to it from the village.

In towns

Telluride’s gondola is free and links the town with Mountain Village. Mi Teleférico in La Paz is a network of urban lines. Maokong Gondola climbs from Taipei Zoo to tea shops in the hills, and the Dharamshala Skyway links lower Dharamshala with McLeod Ganj.

To temples and lookouts

In Nepal, gondolas run to Manakamana Temple and from Pokhara up to Sarangkot. Ngong Ping 360 takes about 25 minutes from Tung Chung to the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway crosses the rainforest canopy between Smithfield and Kuranda.
